When Kelly and Tom’s wedding planning journey began, they were clear from the start.  They knew they wanted to head south, and get married at the beautiful Margaret River winery wedding venue, Black Brewing Co; Kelly and Tom kept their guest list to their agreed capacity; Kelly had her heart set on her wedding gown before she even visited the bridal shop to physically view it; and the earthy hues from their incredible florals and décor blended perfectly with both the surrounds of the venue, and their vision for a modern, classic wedding style.

When the the planning is right, you know the day is going to be pretty special, and thankfully the talented Greta Wolzak Photography was there to capture it all.  Take a look…

Who proposed, and how?

It took a couple of times for Tom’s proposal to go ahead …got to love COVID! Tom originally planned to propose when we were going to be in Europe in May 2020 but COVID had other ideas. Tom quickly put in place a plan B and that was to head down south (because that is our favourite thing to do) to one of our favourite Air BnB’s and propose there. But that wasn’t to be as the pandemic hit WA and we were restricted from travelling outside of Perth. In came plan C, and to my complete surprise, Tom along with some helpers managed to pull off the most wonderful proposal at our home. It was the weekend we were due to go down south and Tom certainly made sure that it was still absolutely perfect. I came home from work on the Friday to a beautiful setup: roses, champagne, gorgeous food, flowers and balloons. It was just the most perfect proposal and I couldn’t have planned it better myself. We spent the rest of our night in complete bliss, sipping on champagne and calling all of our family and friends to share the news.

How did you decide on a wedding venue?

We got married down south at the beautiful venue, Black Brewing Co. We love going down south, its one of our favourite places to visit. We had been to Black Brewing Co a couple of times for lunch and on tours with friends and it was always just the most beautiful spot. They have an incredible lake that takes your breath away. It just always felt like the place we would get married, there was never really any other place we’d consider. We just knew that we would have the most amazing wedding there, and to be able to get married at our favourite spot, made it even more special.

What was your VISION and the inspiration behind it?

For the wedding, we knew that we wanted to plan a day that was just going to be relaxed and fun not only for us, but most importantly for our guests. We wanted it to be filled with incredible food, drinks and lots of dancing! In terms of the aesthetics, I knew that I wanted something that looked timeless, that also had a modern and classic feel. I love neutral tones but because it was spring I wanted to bring in some colour and that is where the earthy tones came in. I love flowers, so that was always going to be a big feature of our day, and Lara Rose Botanical Stylist ensured the flowers brought in a lot of different textures and tones.

What were your biggest hurdles, and how did you overcome them?

COVID-19, planning a wedding in a pandemic is definitely no joke and that was the biggest hurdle planning the wedding without a doubt. My parents and brother live in the UK, Tom had family overseas and we also had family interstate in Australia. We postponed our original wedding from March 2021 to October 2021 hoping that we would be able to have everyone here, however the border restrictions were always changing, so knowing who may or may not be able to come was a constant challenge. As we neared closer to our re-scheduled wedding date of October it was sadly clear that we were not going to be able to have all of our nearest and dearest there. My parents have always been the biggest supporters of Tom and I, and told us that we had to go ahead because the day was for us, and when we could we would have another celebration. My sister, brother in-law and my nieces managed to make it in from QLD and underwent 14-days quarantine to be here for the wedding which was just so special! All of our family and friends were so supportive and helped us in any way they could. Our wonderful DJ (The Perth Wedding Spinner) managed to organise a projector and all the equipment so we could live stream the wedding around the world and most importantly my dad could deliver his speech. My sister and Tom also organised the most special videos from those that couldn’t be there and it was so special! Whilst it wasn’t the same as having them all there in person, it was so beautiful and it really felt like they were all there on the day.

Tell us about your favourite moments of the day...

This is a really hard one, the whole day was so wonderful and filled with so many special moments. For me, seeing Tom for the first time was something I will never forget and it was the best feeling knowing that this was it, and we were finally going to be married. Then it was the interacting with our guests, listening to all the wonderful speeches and spending our first evening as husband and wife with all of those closest to us dancing the night away.

Tell us about that beautiful wedding dress...

My wedding dress was everything I wanted and more. It was the Andy dress by Made with Love Bridal, and I instantly fell in love with it. I had seen the dress before I went to try it on, and the moment I put it on I knew that was it! It felt like it perfectly matched my style and I just remember feeling so comfortable in it, and for me that was so important. I loved that it wasn’t a typical bridal dress, I had never seen anything like it and I loved that because it felt different. The detail of the sequins was just beautiful and the way it caught the light was so incredible. Like the whole wedding, I felt like it had this classic yet modern look. I didn’t want to look back on my photos and not recognise myself because I had gone for a style that didn’t resonate with me, but the Andy dress was perfect and made me feel like the best version of myself.

DETAILS! What were some of your favs from the day?

The table settings and styling of the venue was EPIC! Jess and the Bertie Does team absolutely nailed it. Jess had really listened to me when we discussed the colours and textures, and it all came together so beautifully. It just completely complimented the venue and every single detail was perfectly executed!

The wedding stationary was something else that I couldn’t get enough of.  The talented Paper Fusion team just create the most perfect wedding stationary.

How did you choose your guest list?

The guest list is always difficult and it isn’t until you write down everyone that you realise the numbers that you are looking at. Tom and I always agreed on what our cap number of guests was so we could stay on budget, and we really stuck to that. We focused on making sure all of the special people in our lives were included, and people that had been an important part of our lives singularly but also together. I think we did a really great job and were joined by the best people to celebrate our wedding – even those all around the world that joined us online.

What are your TOP TIPS future couples?

Always remember that the day is about the couple, do what makes you happy, and do what feels right. The day, whilst it will pass in a flash, is most incredible and there isn’t one thing about our day that I regret so that would be my best piece of advice, if its feel right, then do it! Don’t forget to enjoy the lead up as well, whilst the day is the best part, enjoy the whole process with your nearest and dearest, it really is the most wonderful time.
